What’s Hot about Cold Brew Coffee

While cold-brew is still a relative newcomer to the world of coffee, its popularity is exploding.  According to research conducted by Mintel in 2015, retail sales of hot coffee’s cooler cousin grew by an estimated 115% from the year before.   It’s most popular among older millennials (29-38) in the U.S. Here’s what cold-brew coffee connoisseurs say they love best:

  1. A smooth move. Some coffee lovers have made the move to cold brew for a smoother taste.  The biggest difference between iced coffee and cold brew is temperature.  While iced coffee begins its life hot and then cools, cold brew begins and ends cold.  It never hits the heat.  Instead, the grounds are steeped in cold water eliminating the chemical reactions that can cause coffee to take on a slightly bitter and more acidic taste.  According to an article in com, cold brew coffee is easier on the stomach because it’s more alkaline which helps digestion.

  1. It’s easy to make. In fact, some say that it’s the easiest of them all.  While cold brew can get a little pricey when dining out, it’s no more expensive than regular brew when made at home.   You’ll need a large container (a French Press will also do).  Even a giant jar will do the trick.

The ratio of ground coffee to water isn’t an exact science.  It really depends on your personal taste, so you may need to experiment a bit to get it right.  Food52.com suggests starting with ¾ cup of beans to 4 cups of cold water.  The beans should be ground coarsely.  Next, put the coffee in your container and add the water. Make sure all of the grounds are moist.

Now for the hard part — the wait.  We promise that it will be worth it.  Your mixture should stand at room temperature for a minimum of 12 hours (good reason to make a big batch!).  If you’re using a big container, you may want to cover it with a piece of cheesecloth.  At last, grab a pitcher and strain the coffee into it using the cheesecloth.  That’s all there is to it and the coffee will last in your fridge for up to two weeks.

  1. No limit on flavors and varieties. The world is your oyster.  Cold brew delivers a smooth, non-acidic cup of coffee every time.  No need to search for hard-to-find, low-acidic beans.  All flavors and varieties are yours for the taking – and drinking.
